GRE and The Importance of Your Score

The Graduate Record Exam or GRE for short is a standardized test and the scores are used to get admissions into various non-business graduate level institutes and some business institutes in English speaking countries. The test is conducted by the Educational Trust Service (ETS) and evaluates aspirants in their respective fields. The exam is the most popular test to get admission into institutes in the USA. Over one-lakh applications are received from over 150 countries for the GRE exam every year. There are eight GRE subject tests in total including the revised general test. There is no specific eligibility criterion for taking GRE Test. After completed the exam, you will be given three separate scores, one for the Quantitative, one for the Verbal, and one for the Analytic section. The Quantitative and Verbal scores ranging from 130 to 170 in increments of one point, and the Analytic scores ranging from 0 to 6 in increments of half a point.

The Revised General Test is adaptive. Every candidate who has taken the test will see at least two math sections and two verbal sections. The difficulty level of the later section of is adjusting according to the candidate’s performance in the earlier section. Meaning, if you do well in the first few questions of the first section be prepared for tougher questions later. Remember, more difficult questions also mean you have the opportunity to score higher. On the other hand, if you don’t perform well in the earlier section, you will get an easier section later but your potential to score will be limited by it.

Some candidates may also be given experimental math or verbal section in addition to the regular questions, which will not count towards the result. If you see more than two math sections, be sure that math one of those sections is experimental, however, it’s impossible to tell which one is the experimental one. One human and one computer score the essays.

Schools differ in how they use your GRE score to evaluate your candidature. While some consider it very important, others view it as a mere formality. The GRE Subject Tests are similar to the SAT Subject Tests in that they test your knowledge of a particular subject like chemistry or literature. Not every school requires a GRE Subject Test, but many of the most competitive programs do.
